Gordon: Cards trade earns good reviews Live
The Twitterverse blew up when Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak sent David Freese and Fernando Salas to Anaheim for speedy Angels center fielder Peter Bourjos and outfield prospect Randal Grichuk.
Bourjos can chase down fly balls. Walls do not scare him. His pitchers will love him.
He will dramatically upgrade the outfield defense when he plays, taking pressure off less mobile outfielders like Matt Holliday and Allen Craig. Meanwhile Matt Carpenter slides over to play third base and speedy Kolten Wong will add a new element to the lineup at second base.
The addition of Grichuk in this deal is also a plus. He could blossom into a decent run producer at the major league level. He helps balance an outfield supply that mostly featured left-side hitters.
But the key to the deal was getting Bourjos into the outfield in support of the elite Cardinals pitching staff.

Like Freese-Bourjos trade for Cards. Not quite as down on it from Angels side as many fellow pointy-heads. Freese another rebound candidate.

Safe bet if Bourjos stays healthy, plays regularly as result he will be Gomez's challenger for Gold Glove in CF. Elite defense. #cardinals

Even if David Freese fails to return to All-Star form, he's an upgrade over #angels 2013 third base contingent.

The Angels saw David Freese's declining production and decided he was a must-have player.

Last season David Freese had more home runs, a higher batting average and higher slugging percentage than any Angels 3rd baseman.

#Angels third basemen ranked 27th in MLB with a .637 OPS. They also hit 8 HRs. Only #marlins , with 3, had fewer from 3B.

@Cardinals are loading up on outfielders. Grichuk, Piscotty, Ramsay and Butler behind Oscar Tavares. Very competitive ST in 2014.

Randal Grichuk, the OF going to St. Louis, was taken by the Angels with the 24th pick in 2009 draft. Mike Trout was taken one pick later.
