Ask the Road Crew

Construction near the Stan Musial Bridge, the MLK Bridge closed, the Poplar Street Bridge getting worked on - getting around is getting tough. Ask the Road Crew experts from MoDOT, St. Louis and St. Louis County all your commuting questions in the weekly chat on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018 at 1 p.m.

MODOT - there is a temporary traffic signal on Reinke Road in Ellisville/Ballwin. Who is the proper authority to contact regarding the timing of the light? Would it be MODOT or the local county? Neighbors are complaining the timing is off and could use enforcement. Thanks!
If it is on Reinke Road proper, and not, say, Manchester (which is a state maintained roadway, and doesn't have a signal), I would start with the municipality -- if it isn't them, it would be the county.Based on their website, I would start with Ballwin:

City of Ballwin - Street & Bridge Projects

Named as "One of America's Best Places to Live" by Money Magazine in 2005, 2011 and 2013 Ballwin continues to pride itself on offering a wide range of programs and services to its residents. 30,404 people choose to call this dynamic community home.
MoDOT mostly maintains interstates, U.S. routes, and Missouri numbered and lettered routes.  I would also start with the municipality on enforcement.  Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications
The traffic light at Locust and Tucker displays a walk and don't walk light at the same time for crossing Tucker. Confusing!
Our signal technicians will check out the condition you described - thanks
Why does 141 Southbound go down to 2 LANES with the new redesign at 44?!?!?! The traffic back up from this is WORSE than it was before the fly over ramp and redesign construction!!! Can you please fix this so that all traffic can use 3 lanes?!?!?
We had to drop the third lane so that there would be space for the new ramp from westbound I-44 to southbound 141 to come onto southbound 141 without having to merge into traffic.  If that ramp had to merge, it would back up traffic onto the bridge and would it more difficult for northbound drivers to get onto westbound I-44 and would back up onto the interstate.  Traffic speeds during the evening rush are typically four to five minutes between Big Bend and the South Outer Road(unless there is a crash on I-270 that is sending traffic to 141). Before the work, the best time you would see between Big Bend and the South Outer Road would be six minutes during evening rush.  We are continuing to monitor the flow of traffic and make signal adjustments.  Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications
There are ruts in the through driving lanes on both sides of Jefferson as it passes under I-44.
I've asked our maintenance team to check the area to see if there is anything we can do.  We are looking at doing some work around the I-44 bridge at Jefferson in a few years.  Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications
  • I'm curious how you are able to get drive times of 4-5 minutes? I would invite you to drive that stretch from Big Bend south past 44 at about 4:45pm and it will take 20-30 minutes easily! What is now happening is that drivers are starting to use that 3rd lane and then cut over at the last minute so they are not forced to get onto 44 Eastbound. Please- can we come up with something better?!?!?
  • We have driven that stretch of roadway regularly since that project was complete, between 4 and 4:30 (which was when we saw the heaviest traffic along Route 141 prior to the project) -- the individual driving stayed in the center lane from Big Bend to South Outer Highway Drive.  Their times are consistently within the four to five minute mark.  Yes, there are individuals who decide they are going to zip down the exit only lane and cut in line.  As I said, we do continue to monitor the levels of traffic and we are doing traffic counts as part of the project wrap-up.  Besides a resurfacing project, we currently have no further plans at the Route 141 and I-44 interchange.  Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications
  • Hello. Any idea on when the work on Ries Rd in the Ballwin area will be completed? I believe it's bridge repair.
  • Here is some information from the Ballwin web page:

  • Are there any plans in the works for improvements on McKelvey Rd between Aemling and CC Mill Rd?
  • We have a two-phase improvement project scheduled for McKelvey. Under our current schedule, in 2020, the road will be resurfaced from Ameling to Glen Park Drive. The following year, McKelvey will be resurfaced from Glen Park Drive to Creve Coeur Mill. David Wrone, St. Louis County
  • is all of the work on 44 still on time for completion? when is it expected to be completed? especially the section near shrewsbury where westbound is reduced to 2 lanes
  • As of now, we are still on track to get the I-44 bridge near Shrewsbury completed this year.  We will still have some resurfacing work that will be completed next spring (mostly as night to minimize the overall impacts).  We should be complete with the bridge work on eastbound I-44 between Kingshighway and Grand this year, but will be working on the westbound bridges next year.  Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications
  • Hi, Thanks for hosting these chats!
Can MODOT & the City look at the intersection of 12th/Tucker & Gravois & Geyer? Specifically, after recent road work, it appears that a "no right turn on red" was removed from NB 12th coming out of Soulard. I've seen numerous times the past few days of people trying to make a right, with oncoming traffic coming from NE-bound Gravois to the I-44/55 entrance ramp at 35+ mph. Thanks for checking!
  • Thanks for the information -- we will have our crews go out and get that sign back up in the next few weeks.  Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications
  • Thanks for the information on McKelvey. Just wondering, there are a couple of areas on that road that are pretty rough. I can think of one just north of Kentwood on the northbound lanes. Can those get patched similar to what you did on CC Mill by Pattonville?
  • I'll send a report to our Operations group. A patching crew will investigate as soon as possible. David Wrone, St. Louis County
  • Why is the East siders (us in Illinois) treated like step children. The bridges to get into St Louis (downtown area) were closed this past weekend and there;s always at least 1 or 2 est bound lanes closed. Also the MLK closed for a year. is this an in polite way to say you don't want us 'east siders' coming across the river?
  • We can definitely understand your frustration – we do have individuals who live in Illinois and work in Missouri – including an engineer who oversees all MoDOT’s operations in the city (and so is the one who makes many of the decisions to which you refer).  As you are aware, IDOT maintains the Martin Luther King Bridge  (and makes the decisions about how to do construction on the MLK) and MoDOT maintains the Poplar Street Bridge (and makes the decisions on how to work on the PSB) – we do coordinate extensively on these projects to try to minimize the impact of all the work on commuters. IDOT had last weekend's closure to remove portions of the MLK bridge structure over the interstate. Both MoDOT and IDOT strive to ensure we maintain a safe and operational roadway system and use the resources entrusted to us by the respective taxpayers to provide exactly that system.  There are times, however, when the work that needs to be completed has to be done at the same time to avoid greater (or longer) impacts to the interstate system.  MoDOT has been working for nearly two years to build new ramps  a new driving surface and a fifth lane between 6th Street and Illinois Route 3.  Much of that work will ultimately benefit the commuters in Illinois who use the PSB during both morning and evening commutes.
MoDOT is making the final push for the major construction on this project. We will have two more weekends with full eastbound closures this year and westbound lane closures through the end of the year. There will be some minor work next spring, but the majority of the work will be complete this year. We are nearing the end of plans that started when the Stan Musial VMB was constructed. Prior to the Stan Musial, the PSB was constantly congested during morning and evening rush with three interstates. Building the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge gave MoDOT the breathing room needed to make repairs and improvements to the Poplar Street Bridge.  It’s been a long process, but the end is getting closer. IDOT still has planned work for their side, but MoDOT is almost finished with expected work on the PSB. Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications
  • With heavy residential development south of 40 between Hwy DD and N, the southbound turn lane from 40 West at DD/Winghaven light needs to be adjusted. There is often multiple cars (5+) waiting to turn south/left onto DD for minutes when there are no other vehicles moving through the intersection. A round about would be ideal but i won't hold my breath. Thanks!
  • Is there any specific time (s) you are seeing this issue (during morning rush or evening rush, for instance).  That information can help our team better evaluate any potential issues.  Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications
  • Regarding DD/Winghaven and Highway 40, it is really all times of the day, but even worse during evenings. Thanks!
  • Thanks - I'll share your observations with our traffic team to see if they can make any adjustments.  Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications
