Questions about street lights or highway construction? Ask the Road Crew, 1 p.m.

Ask the experts from the Missouri Department of Transportation, St. Louis and St. Charles counties and St. Louis City your questions about highways and roads. The live chat starts at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

Good Afternoon. It seems the utility work on Mackenzie Road between Heege and Gravois is complete. Will the contractor return the road to how it was before they started work? The concrete that they used to fill in the holes are rather rough.
They are supposed to return the roadway to original condition -- sometimes there is a short period after the work appears to be done to ensure that everything is working correctly before they do that -- they don't want to make a repair and then tear it back out if there is an issue.  If there are specific areas of concern along the roadway, feel free to let us know and we can have our forces check it out.  As a reminder, we do have a project that should be starting shortly that will start work on sidewalk and signal upgrades and then wrap up with a resurfacing in about two years.  Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications
I believe St. Louis County controls the signal at Brownbert and Rock Hill. It is cycling at all hours of the day, regardless of car or pedestrian traffic. It's been doing this for a few weeks now, but didn't used to, so maybe a detector is broken?
UPDATED INFORMATION: The City of Rock Hill maintains this signal. You'll need to contact the muni. David Wrone, St. Louis County's Department of Transportation
I drove into downtown early this morning by heading east on 64. I happened to look over where the new MLS practice field is located adjacent to the highway. Granted, is was rather dark, and I was on the opposite side of the interstate, and traveling at 60 MPH, but there appeared to be a gap of several feet in the netting off of the practice field. It may be that construction is not done on that section, or it is not even a cause for concern. However, I am concerned about the possibility of a soccer ball being kicked onto the highway which would likely result in tragic consequences. Is something that someone can look into?
Thank you for bringing this concern to my attention. I'll reach out to MLS General Contractor to remedy this issue...Larry Tyler / Streets & Traffic Liaison
When will the work on the I-70/Broadway overpass downtown be completed?
The Broadway bridge work over I-44 in the downtown area will be complete late next spring or early next summer.  Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communication
This is for St. Louis city street dept. There are quite a few manhole covers that sit way below the street surface, the worst ones (in my opinion) are on north 4th street between Federal Reserve Bank Plaza and St. Charles St. in the far left lane. A few of them are around 3-4 inches lower than the street and one of them is even broken. i've seen quite a few cars bottom out in them and scrape. Is there anyway these manhole covers can be brought up to street level or at least close? And please fix the broken one! everyone swerves out of the way of it creating a dangerous situation especially during high traffic times.
Thank you for bringing this concern to my attention. I'll inspect this area of concern and forward to member utilities for repair...Larry Tyler  / Streets & Traffic Liaison
I have read this chat for quite a while so i thank everyone for answering everyone's comments. My comment today is in regards to I-70 between I-170 to the musial bridge exit. To me (in my opinion and probably others as well) that I-70 is very neglected as far as general maintenance is concerned. Meaning trash removal and debris removal along the shoulder and median , overgrowth of vegetation along the fence lines, brush growing out of drains in the median or clogged full of trash. This has been brought up many many times and the highway will get cleaned for a week and then it's back to it's old self again.

About a week ago i almost hit a school desk near the Bermuda exit going east bound in the far left lane. And i've seen plastic barrels, tires etc. Now someone is cleaning up some of that big stuff but the rest is left to just sit there. I drive the highway everyday to and from downtown and i can tell you that it's not being cleaning up regardless if someone says it is.

it would be really nice if this stretch of highway could take the same amount of care like crews are taking care of I-64 out in Ladue and west county. Please please try to make this stretch of highway better! This part of STL is part of the reason why we get a bad rap.
Crews are out regularly on I-70 -- in fact, we have a contracted crew that helps supplement picking up debris along the corridor.  If you see debris that has fallen onto the roadway, and is creating a safety concern, please feel free to let our customer service team know at 314-275-1500 and we'll get someone out to remove it.  Andrew Gates, MoDOT
I was traveling northbound on Hanley last night and crossed Manchester. I was surprised at the poor the conditions of the road and how jolting the ride was. I know that this area is ongoing construction project, but what is the timeline for repaving both Manchester and Hanley?
Manchester is scheduled to be resurfaced after all the sidewalk construction is complete.  That is projected to happen sometime late next spring. Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications
That appears to be all the questions we have for this week.  This chat will be on hiatus next week due to the Thanksgiving holiday.  We'll see you in two weeks!  Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications
