Questions about street lights or highway construction? Ask the Road Crew, 1 p.m.

Ask the experts from the Missouri Department of Transportation, St. Louis and St. Charles counties and St. Louis City your questions about highways and roads. The live chat starts at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

No questions or complaints, I just wanted to recognize the efforts of all of your understaffed crews during the past couple of storms . . . Thanks!
I am sure I speak for all the Road Crew when I say thanks for your kudos.  Ice storms and cold are a tough fight for our teams, and they spend a lot of time out working to get the roadways in a safe condition as quickly as possible. Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications
Last week, a comment came in late about the sign for Faust Park, and that often people turn into a subdivision rather than the park entrance..  MoDOT currently has a project along Route 340 (Olive) and I talked with the team overseeing that project.  As a part of the project, we will be moving the green and white sign about 75 feet closer to the park entrance.  The stone sign is on Park property, so you would have to talk to the county parks team about moving that one.  Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications
There is a massive crevasse (beyond a pothole) all the way across the exit from westbound Manchester onto Des Peres Road.

Additionally - the red light at the bottom of that ramp is still super-long for the traffic on the ramp, giving phantom traffic on Des Peres more green time. I've asked previously if this could be adjusted - quite often during the morning rush (I've seen this between 6 and 8:30am, Monday - Friday) the exiting traffic is backed up onto Manchester.

    Thanks!
Thanks!  I have shared your two observations with our maintenance and signal teams to investigate.  Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications
Last week, a Road Crew chat participant asked: "Do you know who manages the lights at McCutchen and Clayton Road? Not too long ago, some adjustments were made to the light so that once a Red light is presented to both directions of Clayton Road, the first green granted is to a driveway for a house on the north side of Clayton Road. Then, a Green light is finally presented to McCutchen, where there are almost always a few cars waiting. I can only imagine that those residents in the house on the north side of Clayton are only leaving and coming a few times a day. With Clayton Road not being terribly busy right there, can't they just yield to the traffic and turn at their own risk?"

OUR ANSWER: Because vehicle-detecting sensors had been temporarily disabled by construction work on Clayton Road, we had programmed the signals in question to automatically cycle into "Green" mode. This is done to ensure that all drivers eventually get a "Green" indication. However, the downside to this measure is that the signal for the house on the north side of Clayton Road would get a "Green" indication even if a car wasn't present. With the road work wrapped up, and the disabled sensors repaired, we have returned this network of signals to its normal cycle - whereby the light for the house doesn't cycle to "Green" unless a vehicle is present. The signals are now functioning properly and as designed. David Wrone, St. Louis County's Department of Transportation

Please tell me pavement at the intersection at Manchester and Hanley, particularly the Northbound side of Hanley, will be fixed somehow? It's essentially like "off-roading" now.
We are still in the middle of a construction project on Manchester Road between Big Bend and Lindbergh.  When the sidewalk work is finished a little later this spring, the entire stretch of Manchester between those two roads gets a new driving surface. I'll ask our construction team to take a look at the intersection to see if any patching needs to take place in the mean time.  Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications
Seriously, what is the procedure for removing deer carcass, particularly along the I-70 corridor. Traveling to KC and back this weekend I stopped counting at twenty-two...
You can always share that information with our customer service team 24/7 at 1-888-ASK-MODOT. They'll pass that along to our maintenance forces who will respond as they can, based on weather and other priorities. They will typically remove the carcass if there is a health or safety issues. Often, they will be moved off the roadway on to right of way where they can decompose naturally -- at this time Department of Conservation has asked us to keep the carcasses where they are, to better manage a wasting disease.  Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications
Still lots of potholes in the McKnight /Manchester intersection.
  • I'll share your observation with the construction team overseeing the project on Manchester.  Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications
I saw piles of rock I think n maybe salt at the exit from west bound 364 to south bound 270 - is there a project coming up??
  • The only potential work in that area is some bridge maintenance set for the Route 364 corridor.  Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications
How long does it typically take to replace/repair the cable barriers in the medians along rural interstates?
It depends on the type of cable -- Once all the needed materials are in, they are usually addressed as time, weather and other priorities permit.  If there is one that has been down for a while, you are always welcome to share it with our customer service team 24/7 at 888-ASK-MODOT.  It is possible that the cable was struck and we never were informed about the damage.  Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications
