Thanks for joining us! This redesign has been in the works for several months as we set up the design of the site, the people who know more about code than I do set up LOTS of changes, and advertising folks changed the advertising presentations as well.
We hope to get your feedback here. What you like, what you don't ... what you have a hard time finding.
We've already made changes to respond to initial reader feedback (and feedback from our reporters and photographers). Some of those changes are already live on the site, others are waiting for updates from TownNews, the company that provide us with the templates and our content management system.
One change: We added an "Obits" link to the pop-over menu you access from the "menu" button in the black navigation bar.
The redesign is responsive, which means it's the same site on mobile (if you go to stltoday.com from your phone's browser) and desktop.
If you are looking for a particular section of the site ... comics, obits, mizzou coverage, presidential campaign coverage, the best way to find it is to go to the menu at the upper left corner of every page. You'll find our coverage areas arranged by category.
... Now you've made me hungry!
So ... say you were interested in finding more news about the Copper Pig. You can go to the search menu at the upper right (the magnifying glass) and type in Copper Pig... note that i find the search works really well if I put quotation marks around the search term ... like "Copper Pig" or "Social House"
The design also makes it easy to contact the reporter who wrote the article.
At the bottom of news articles written by local reporters, you'll find more information about them, including a link to their Twitter feed (if they have one), email address and a way to "follow" all the articles they write and post to stltoday.
Also on the right side of the home page, under quick clicks is a link to columnist,s, comics, obits and more...
The fly-out menu on the left side of the black navigation is where you can find links to our sections, including local political news, columnists and sports. Click the down arrows next to the section names to find more options.
You get to that menu by hitting the "Menu" button with three horizontal lines.
The information below is from chartbeat... it shows that at this very instant 817 people are reading the story about the killings in western Missouri. 212 are reading about Peralta, and 186 are about Bigfoot
We frequently use information like this to determine which articles to highlight on the home page.
@NickG: Oh, Snap! You're using Chrome, and that's the Chrome error message you're receiving.
As for why it's happening only when you come to stltoday.com, I'm not sure. I have websites crash on me from time to time, and not just stltoday.
Chrome is one of the best browsers to view stltoday. When you have a specific crash, you can let me or beth know to see if there is something specifically wrong with that page.
You can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
OR, find me on Twitter -- where I'll most likely ask you to email me. Bob, when people email, what are the details they should send?
We have tried to eliminate many of the third-party scripts that used to bog down the site. Also, in updating the site, we streamlined some sections, which might cause 404 errors, but not the crashes you mention.
@NickG: Thanks! We'll look into this a little more.
That is in slideshow format... It's a bit more complex than a regular article, but we haven't had problems with those in testing. You're viewing on a desktop?
Two other pages worth checking out:
stltoday.com/pictures highlights the work of our Pulitzer-Prize winning photo staff
and stltoday.com/watch has all our video series, including Bottom Line, Street Style and Commish's Classics
OK, well as the Weatherbird said earlier, if you want to fill out a survey to let us know what you think about the redesign, go to stltoday.com/tellus.
Thanks for joining us today, and I hope you enjoy exploring the site!
