Tied up in traffic? Curious about construction? Ask the Road Crew

Ask the experts from the Missouri Department of Transportation, St. Louis and St. Charles counties and St. Louis City your questions about highways and roads. The live chat starts at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

The left-turn signal for eastbound Bayless Avenue onto northbound I-55 has been dwelling on a red arrow instead of a flashing yellow. Was it intentional to make this movement a protected-only left turn instead of a permissive/protected-only turn? There doesn't seem to be a justification, so I am reporting this as a possible signal malfunction. Thank you.
I checked with our traffic team, and they did make this a protected only left turn due to the Grants Trail Crossing bridge reducing the distance people can see when they make the turn.  We are looking to get the signal updated to a different signal head, but higher priorities in the system are taking precedence. Thanks for sharing your concern. Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications
Two questions for MODOT--First, someone must have had an accident on I-44 near the Mississippi Avenue overpass in the City limits and divider between the east and westbound lanes is damaged. Will this be fixed anytime soon? Second, on the Hampton entrance ramp to westbound I-44, homeless people have pitched a couple of tents on what I assume is MODOT property, and I also assume is illegal. They are also adjacent to the backyards of the property owners who live next to the highway. Does MODOT work with the City to try and get these people re-housed?
I am checking with our maintenance team to ensure they are aware of the damaged median on I-44.  It can sometimes take some time to get the material needed to make those repairs, especially if there are other higher priority issues that may need to be addressed.  As far as your second concern, yes, we do partner with the city to relocate people away from roadways and overpasses.  Conditions can be dangerous for both them, and the people using the roadway.  Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications
Grant's Trail users face a constant, actual, and realized danger of vehicles making turns through lit protected crosswalks. Probably the most dangerous of these spots is east bound 55 exit to south bound River City Blvd. Cars not looking right and back (or even straight ahead at the no turn light and red arrow) before accelerating hard makes this a lethal trap for trail users.
North bound Pardee Ln to east bound Watson Rd also has the same problem of a sweeping turn lane and often overlooked No Right Turn white signal lights and red turn arrow.
The crossing at Union Rd has multiple problems, most dangerous is vehicles making a right turn out of the Philips 66 gas station across the lit cross walk, followed by cars continuing to turn left after the light changes from Green Park Rd.
Reavis Barracks Rd crossing. I have seen cars just blatantly run through a long red traffic light (oddly always northwest bound). Also seen numerous times cars make turns from Hill's Storage, Maaco / Taylor Crane, and even the trailhead parking (duh!) through the protected crossing.
These are not theoretical problems, I have personally seen vehicles go through these protected crossing repeatedly and ongoing. I'm just one adult riding Grant's trail a few times a week observing these problems. Kids and families also use these crossings. Please examine how other countries successfully de-conflict vulnerable crossings, because the existing USA practices have failed. At the very least remove the right turn on red option at the 55 exit all the time. Sucks for them but vehicles have lost that privilege. No turn signs would also be very appropriate at the other spots.
Most of what you outline are enforcement issues,  which have to be addressed by the local law enforcement agencies (who do not work for MoDOT).  You may want to reach out to them.  I have shared your concerns with Great Rivers Greenway (who oversees the trail) for them to advocate with the appropriate law enforcement agencies as well as with our area engineer who oversees most of the MoDOT roadways that are impacted to discuss with the appropriate municipalities and law enforcement agencies.  I'm told our traffic team has already determined that no turn on red sign for the I-55 and River City Blvd is appropriate and we are waiting for our sign team to install.  If I get more, I'll share it..  Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications
There seems to be a problem with the timing of the lights on Lindbergh Blvd. between Lemay Ferry and Mueller Rd. during off peak periods. I've frequently encountered major back-ups in both directions around mid-day during Mon-Fri and at various times on Saturdays and Sundays. The timing appears to be correct during rush hours Mon-Fri, as these back-ups don't usually occur at those times. Can the cause of the off-hours traffic jams be investigated?
I've passed this along to our traffic team to see if they can identify any issues. My guess is that the backups are predominantly due to the large number of restaurants in that stretch, and people patronizing them for lunch during the week and then brunch, lunch or dinner for the weekends.  If I hear anything back, I'll share it.  Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications
  • For MODOT - I had to call the Customer Service number, today, to report debris on I-70, and I was very satisfied with the service!
  • Thanks for sharing that!  I'm sure our customer service team appreciates the kudos.  Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications
