Hi there, thanks for taking questions. This is mostly for St. Louis County but might apply to everyone. Is there a list available that shows where sections of roadways stand on priority for general upkeep (resurfacing)? I'm specifically interested in Shrewsbury Ave as it crosses I-44. It's been in terrible shape (potholes, crumbling curbs, shoulder decay) for more than ten years. I understand there's priority of where funds can go, however, and would feel better knowing it's #xxx on some list. If there is can you point me to it? If not, is it possible? Thank you! -
If you are speaking only of the Shrewsbury Ave overpass -- that bridge/ overpass is maintained by MoDOT., since it goes over the interstate. We are looking at funding overpass rehab work along the I-44 corridor between Holmes Ave and Shrewsbury, but that hasn't happened to this point. Right now, we are minimizing further construction along the I-44 corridor until the Meramec River Bridge project is finished next year, although we have funded a project at Big Bend over I-44 (near Kirkwood). We’ve recently received multiple complaints regarding the flashing lights at Big Bend and Rock Hill Road. This malfunction was caused by the inadvertent slicing by a utility contractor of an underground conduit that houses cables that control the signals. Last week, a Road Crew chat participant made the following observation about the signals controlling Brentwood and Marshall: “In the morning, the light for Brentwood often switches to ‘red’ for non-existent Marshall Avenue traffic.” ST. LOUIS COUNTY’S REPLY: Our signals group investigated, and determined that the signals are functioning properly. However, they also observed multiple occasions when a pedestrian who needed to cross Brentwood pushed the ‘pedestrian walk’ button and ambled across the road BEFORE the “walk” signal activated (and before the signals cycled to ‘red’ for Brentwood traffic). By the time the pedestrians completed their journey across Brentwood and continued on their way, Brentwood’s light turned ‘red’, and motorists on that street were (are) left with the impression that the signal is malfunctioning or cycling for no reason, when in fact it cycled for the pedestrian who crossed prematurely. Another Road Crew chat participant asked last week for information about the signals at Delmar and Jackson in University City. “The light … is making me crazy! It cycles through walk/don’t walk and starts all over 2 or 3 times once you pull up to the light.” ST. LOUIS COUNTY’S REPLY: Although it undoubtedly doesn’t seem like it, these lights are functioning properly. The problem is that the signal system at this intersection is antiquated and needs to be completely rebuilt. And until that happens – and at present, I don’t have a timetable for that project – our options to address the conditions you describe are very limited, if not non-existent. This past Monday morning I was third in line to make a left from North & South Rd onto eastbound Page Ave. it seems like we were waiting at least 5 minutes for the left arrow. When we finally got the green, it stayed green long enough for two cars to make the left. Me being third in line meant waiting a long time for the next arrow. Is there a sensor at that intersection? I see a camera there. Thanks for your input.

Depending on the time, you were probably in the morning rush signal plan -- which is typically timed, rather than based on sensors. Typically, the roadway (and turns) with the most traffic (in this case Page Avenue) gets the most amount of signal time. You don't say whether there was any traffic on Page at this time. If you have other specific information, I can certainly pass it along to our traffic team to see if there are any opportunities to tweak signal timing here. Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications

I'm appreciative of the new sidewalks popping up along various stretches of Gravois and Mackenzie roads. However, one sore spot for me is the lack of a sidewalk along the revitalized Affton Plaza. Instead, small trees and sod were placed. I'm hoping that this is because of the presence of utility poles and that over time, the poles will be moved a foot or so back, allowing for a sidewalk. It sticks out like a sore thumb.

Although we do have a project set for the portion of Mackenzie that falls under MoDOT's maintenance (Route P between Watson and Gravois) soon that includes additional sidewalks, we have no plans for further work along Gravois in that area at this time. I have a question about the additional west bound lanes at the Hwy 44 Meramec river bridge project that are currently being constructed. You had mentioned previously that these additional lanes would not be open until early next year. However, it appears that they are nearing completion now. Has the official schedule changed?

What time are you seeing this? This is a pretty busy interchange (between I-64, Hampton and Oakland) -- and there would be some concerns about avoiding backups on any of these roadways. However, with a more specific time, I can ask our traffic engineers to work with the city to see if they can make any tweaks. Andrew Gates, MoDOT Communications

There is a county-owned and maintained street near me (unincorporated) that services a trucking firm. This firm has installed its own No Parking signs. Not only that, they then park their big rigs there for themselves. Additionally, they have placed tow warning signs.
Is this legal? -
Under I-44 Elm overpass, northbound left turn lane onto 44 westbound. Please remove “yield during flashing arrow” sign. It’s redundant for one, because drivers should know what a flashing yellow signal means and it causes dumb drivers, (majority) to yield to southbound drivers in the right turn lane onto 44 westbound for which, there’s a yield sign for them. It causes unnecessary backups and frustration to those of us who know how to drive!🤬

Mr. Wilson, in front of St. Frances Cabrini Academy at Arsenal Street and Oregon Avenue, there are mid-block stop signs from the school to the parking lot. When the stop signs were placed, they were on spindles so that they could be turned after school, on weekends and during the summer. One of them was knocked down and the city replaced it with one on a fixed pole. Was this a mistake or does the city not use turnable stop signs?
A lot of us want them to be turned when school is not in session. Thank you. -
