I know that the state subsidizes Amtrak service between St Louis and Kansas City. What does that subsidy come down to on a per-ticket-purchased basis? Thanks!
Good afternoon.  I am Brian Umfleet, the District Traffic Engineer for MoDOT St. Louis.  I will be filling in for Drew Gates today, who is on a much deserved vacation.  It is difficult to give an accurate dollar amount for each ticket as ridership varies from day to day and season to season.  Ridership was also reduced until recently due to Covid-19 fears.  For the state fiscal year starting July 1st, 2021, Amtrak is slated to receive $10.85 million dollars.  It should be noted that the second round trip service between KC and St. Louis will resume on July 19th.
A question about the Big Bend bridge replacement project at I-44. Has a definite start and finish date been defined, yet? Thanks!
The Big Bend bridge over I-44 is scheduled to be awarded in October, with construction planned to being in Spring of 2022. We are hoping to for construction to start in March or April of 2022 and hope to have the bridge reopened by the start of school in the fall.  The project is is scheduled for total completion by late fall 2022.

A few weeks ago I commented that the left turn bay from eastbound Olive to northbound Fee Fee was not getting a green arrow. I only saw this in the early evening because it was the only time I passed that way. The response was it would be checked but was likely due to the sun, despite this intersection seeming to have in-pavement detection loops. Left turn arrow problems have continued, with no green arrow happening in the evening a few weeks ago on a cloudy day (no sun), and now yesterday around 8:15 am the left turn bays in both directions of Olive got green arrows despite both bays being completely empty. I have seen the westbound turn bay repeatedly be given a green arrow when empty over the last 6 months. Something seems to be screwed up with the left turn arrow at Olive and Fee Fee that warrants attention soon. Note that the problems are always on Olive, the turn arrows if one approaches the intersection along Fee Fee are fine.
This intersection detection is controlled by video detection.  The pavement loops are not active or utilized at this time.  I will have our signal staff look into this again and hopefully resolve this issue.  Please feel free to contact our customer service staff at 314-275-1500 at any time that you observe issues.

Thanks for hosting the chats. This request is for the City. Is there any hope that Hampton between Fyler and Gravois will get resurfaced anytime soon? There are numerous potholes, failed utility patches and raised areas that leave this stretch of road very subpar. There are dozens of issues that need attention on this stretch of road in both directions.
Hampton (Chippewa to Gravois) will be resurfaced during this paving season thanks to ward capital funding provided by both Alderman Oldenburg (Ward 16) and Alderman Stephens (Ward 12).
Going east on lemay ferry at reavis there was a left turn arrow but lately the arrow is not coming on like it used to
  • I checked with our traffic engineer responsible for that signal and it sounds like we have a malfunction of the detection equipment.  We will get our signal technicians out to see if they can correct the problem.  Thanks

I reported a malfunction with the traffic signal at I-55 and Reavis Barracks Road in December of January. That's five to seven months ago. The left-turn arrow to enter southbound I-55 always comes on and it's long. I'm told the signal is on recall, which means it's always going to get a left-turn arrow.

When will this be fixed? My patience is wearing thin. I know that parts may be hard to come by due to the pandemic, but come on. At least shorten the guaranteed green time. I pass through that signal to get to the twin signal and I seldom am given a left arrow for my movement onto northbound I-55. Why are my left turns less important than the other sides? The coordination between one signal with detection and the other on recall is non-existent.

    Thank you.
Eastbound walnut has a red light when westbound Walnut has a green light at Fourth. Why?
Eastbound and Westbound signal phases do operate separately ("split phased") at 4th & Walnut, which is typical given that the eastbound movement consists of dual left turning lanes with protected turning signal indications.
  • Could you give me a little more detail?  Is this happening on a particular day and particular time?  If you could give these details, I can have someone troubleshoot this.  -Remember, you can always call 314-275-1500 to report these problems.

This is a follow up to my inquiry about the left turn signal onto Westbound Manchester from Northbound Kingshighway. This is at 6am in the morning. A lot of people take this way due to the train traffic on Macklind or Sublette and not wanting to get stopped by a train and be late to work. There are a lot of businesses along Manchester including Spire where a lot of workers report early. Thanks for any insight your engineers can give.

  • Thanks for the follow up.  I will check with our traffic engineers to see if we can increase the time for this left turn movement without having any negative impacts to traffic flow on southbound Kingshighway.

  • I would like to see if you can look at the traffic signal from EB 270 to NB New Florissant Rd. At any time this can happen - the vehicles making the left turn from 270 onto New Florissant often get stuck in the intersection because cars on New Florissant crossing the intersection are waiting at the next light for cars from SB Dunn Rd to cross New Florissant.
  • I'll have our traffic engineers take a look and see if there is anything that can be done to improve the situation.

  • SB Lindbergh at Litzsinger where there is new concrete pavement at the water line tie-in. The concrete sits an inch or two below the asphalt which is pretty jarring. Can the asphalt pavement be shaved down to smooth that out?
  • It is the responsibility of the utility company to correct any pavement deficiencies resulting from their work.  We will look into this and ask the utility company to make the necessary corrections at this location.

  • A few weeks ago someone made a comment regarding the trash along the highways in the area. I would like to point out i drive I-70 everyday from Maryland Heights to downtown and the section between Broadway to the end/begining of the express lanes, including the express lanes themselves (both west bound and east bound) has been full of trash and debris along the median and the shoulder for over 2 years. It's so embarrassing to see other parts of the city and county get cleaned up but this part has just been neglected for some reason. Is there some sort of logistics on which areas get cleaned up before others? in the past few months i came across a cleaning crew in the middle of the night on 270 with a road sweepers and thought to myself they will get to 1-70 soon but that didn't happen. I've almost hit debris in this stretch a few times before because it never seems to get cleaned up.
  • Litter removal is a never ending task.  With issues ranging from folks throwing their trash out of their car to unsecured items and trash blowing out of vehicles.  We routinely sweep and pick up litter on all of the areas interstates.  We recently were able to start using incarcerated personnel again for litter pickup, which is a big help.  However, it is not uncommon for us to pick up and sweep a stretch of interstate and have it look like we have not touched, in a matter of days.

A couple of questions about the I-44 bridge project over the Meramec River. Is the project still on schedule for completion this fall? And, have the bridge(s) ever been named? Can they? Will they? How do bridges, in general, end up being named?
The I-44 project is scheduled to be completed by January 22, 2022.  Delays occurred due to flooding of the Meramec River during construction.  The naming of a bridge is typically done by the political entities where the bridge lies.  Typically, an ordinance is passed assigning a name to the bridge by the political entity.  This is the same process by which state highways are assigned "names".

Any plans to fix the far left lanes on I-270 both north and south bound between Manchester Rd and Clayton Rd? They have patched it with asphalt pot hole repair but it is very bumpy and everyday there is more deterioration with concrete chunks flying in the air.
There is a project that is scheduled to be let in March of 2022 that will address the deterioration of the pavement that you are describing.  Please notify us at 314-275-1500 if you see something in the meantime and we will perform a repair in the meantime.
